Medication Administration

Medication ­administration in schools ​is governed by Wis. Stat. sec. 118.29. Both non-prescription (over-the-counter) and prescription medication must be recognized as drugs in the official U.S. Pharmacopoeia and National Formulary or official Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States.

NON-PRESCRIPTION (OVER-THE-COUNTER) MEDICATION
Please attempt to give any medication to your student before or after school. If a family believes their student is unable to attend school without receiving a non­-prescription medication during the school day, the family must comply with Wisconsin Act 160 of Administration of Drugs to Pupils Law.

To safely administer non-­prescription medication to your student, EASD requires the following policies be strictly adhered to.
  1. The non-­prescription medication, supplied by a legal guardian, must be in the original manufacturer’s packaging (bottle or blister pack) with the list of active ingredients and recommended therapeutic dosage.
  2. Written signature of a legal guardian on an official Non-Prescription Medication Administration Permission form must be submitted to the school office.
  3. The school is only able to give guardian-provided acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough medicine, antacids, or antihistamines. Aspirin is not allowed. Vitamins, supplements, and digestive aids require a physician’s order.
    • By Wisconsin Law Wisconsin State Statute 118.29 Act 160 EASD CANNOT accept non-­prescription medication in a baggy or in a container where the label is not clear even if the pills are identifiable to us.
    • We are not able to administer “homemade” medication, creams, drops, essential oils, or homeopathic mixtures to students.
  4. Non-prescription drug products may only be administered in a higher-than-recommended dosage by written approval of the medical provider and legal guardian.
  5. Any non-prescription drug which is needed for more than three days (three doses) needs a physician’s signature.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION
By Wisconsin State Law (statute 118.29), NO prescription medication, emergency or otherwise, will be given to a student unless it is prescribed by the student’s physician and both the family and physician have filled out the proper forms.

Please attempt to schedule medication before or after school. Medications that are ordered three times a day may be given before school, after school and at bedtime unless specified by the physician that they need to be given during the school day.

Families must provide a measuring spoon or device if the medication is liquid. All tablets that need to be split, need to be split by the family. The school is only able to provide the service of dispensing physician-ordered medication if the family complies with Wisconsin Act 160 of Administration of Drugs to Pupils Law which states families must:
  1. Supply and deliver the medication to the school office in the original pharmacy-­labeled package and the package must list the ingredients and recommended therapeutic dose in a legible format.
    • EASD CANNOT accept medication in a baggy or in a container where the label is not clear, even if the pills are identifiable to us.
  2. The pharmacy label package must specify:
    • Name of the student
    • Name of the prescriber (physician/nurse practitioner/dentist)
    • Name of the drug
    • The dose of the drug
    • The effective date
    • Directions in the legible format: such as the time to be taken and number of days to be taken
  3. A doctor’s order is presented to the school.
  4. The family and healthcare provider complete and sign the EASD Permission for School Administration of Prescription Medication form that states the reason for taking the medication.

NARCOTIC PAIN MEDICATION

​If your student requires a prescription pain medication that is known to reduce the function of the central nervous system, such as Vicodin, Hydrocodone, Tylenol #3, Oxycontin, etc., we request you keep your student safe in your care until their pain can be controlled with a non-­narcotic pain medication.

Students are not allowed to have drugs or other controlled substances, such as a narcotic pain medication, on school property even if there is a physician’s order for the medication.

MEDICATION SAFETY
Families should drop off any medication for their student with office staff. Do not to send medication to school on the bus. All medication stored at school is kept secure in a locked cabinet. Medication not picked up after 48 hours of non-­use or discontinuation will be disposed of. Medication will not be sent home with students unless the student is 18 years old, with the exception of inhalers.
